More about the documents that need to be notarised and legalised in the UK for use in the United Arab Emirates - UAE

The primary purposes for using a UK Notary for the UAE fall into three categories:

  1. Employment & Professional Relocation
  2. If you have been offered a job in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or any other Emirate, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) will require proof of your qualifications.
    • Degree Certificates & Transcripts: A Notary must certify your original educational documents as genuine before they can be sent for an Apostille and UAE Embassy attestation.
    • Professional Licenses: If you are a doctor, engineer, or teacher, your UK professional registrations must be notarised to obtain a UAE work permit.
    • Police Clearance (ACRO/DBS): While some original government-signed certificates might not strictly require a notary for the FCDO, the UAE Embassy often requires notarisation to ensure the copy being processed is verified.

  3. Business Setup & Corporate Governance
  4. For UK companies expanding into the UAE or opening a bank account there, notarisation is mandatory for almost all corporate paperwork:
    • Power of Attorney (PoA): To appoint a local agent or manager in the UAE to act on behalf of a UK company.
    • Board Resolutions: Formally recording the company’s decision to open a branch or subsidiary.
    • Constitutional Documents: Certifying copies of the Memorandum and Articles of Association or the Certificate of Incorporation.
    • Commercial Contracts: Authenticating signatures on agency agreements, distribution deals, or property leases.

  5. Family Sponsorship & Personal Legal Matters
  6. If you are moving with a family or handling personal assets:
    • Sponsoring Dependents: To bring a spouse or children to the UAE, you must notarize and attest your Marriage Certificate and Birth Certificates.
    • Selling Property: If you own property in the UAE but cannot travel there to sign the deed, a UK Notary must witness you signing a Power of Attorney.
    • Wills & Inheritance: Ensuring that a UK-drafted will is recognized by UAE courts for assets held within the Emirates.

Economy and Trade Relations between the UAE and UK.

United Arab Emirates Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The UAE-UK trade relationship is experiencing continuous development in various fields, including investment, trade, health, energy, education, space, tourism, food security, and technology.

Through bilateral platforms such as the UK-UAE Business Council, the Joint Taskforce, and the Joint Economic Committee, the UAE and UK identify and leverage joint opportunities for economic growth.

Over 5,000 UK businesses operate in the UAE. In 2019, new rules were introduced allowing 100 percent foreign ownership in several sectors including technology, outer space, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence. The UK is the UAE’s largest source of Foreign Direct Investment, meaning this new regulation will benefit both Britain and the UAE.

Recent trade and investment highlights include:

  • Total trade between the UK and GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries) was worth £33.51 billion in 2021.
  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the UAE reached £17.12 billion in 2021.
